Bill has significant experience in new product development, commercializing new products & using strategic partnerships to facilitate new product implementation. He is a strong advocate for technology transfer from universities into US companies through his involvement in advisory committees to materials science & engineering departments at 4 US universities.
He has invested in over 60 companies & founded 4 angel groups in the US: Tech Coast Angels with over 250 angels located in Southern California (Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, Los Angeles, Anaheim & San Diego), Vegas Valley Angels with 45 angel investors, Aztec Venture Network with 31 members, & Frontier Angel Fund with 33 accredited investors.
Bill has been honored with the highest, Hans Severiens Memorial Award for Outstanding Contribution to Angel Investing in recognition of his accomplishments, leadership & influence in advancing the role of angel investing & expanding entrepreneurship. He has also received the Arch Angel Award, the highest award recognizing outstanding contributions to angel investing in New Zealand.
Bill has served as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence for the Kauffman Foundation (12 years). He led the development & was the key instructor of 8 seminars & workshops for entrepreneurs & investors on capital sources for entrepreneurs (Kauffman Foundation, Angel Research Institute). He was also an editor of www.eVenturing.com, an online monthly magazine for high-growth entrepreneurs, & the Power of Angel Investing seminar series delivered at several hundred events by multiple lead instructors in many locations. Bill has personally led the delivery of over 100 seminars & workshops in 10 countries, 35 states of the US & 4 provinces of Canada, including Poland, Ireland, Russia, Estonia & Finland to entrepreneurs & investors. In addition, Bill was part of a team of angel leaders & Kauffman associates who founded the Angel Capital Association (ACA) & the Angel Resource Institute.
Bill developed new ceramic materials & products for Interpace Corporation & thermal control coatings for the Surveyor spacecraft for Hughes Aircraft. He was President of Vistatech Corporation, a startup subsidiary of Carlisle Companies Inc., charged with commercializing proprietary technology for volume-efficient multilayer ceramic capacitors, which he licensed to Mitsubishi Materials Corporation. He served as the President of United States Advanced Ceramics Association (trade association), National Institute of Ceramic Engineers (professional organization) & American Ceramic Society (technical society with 3,000 engineers & scientists). Bill co-founded Solid State Dielectrics, Inc. & sold it to Du Pont.
Bill graduated with BS and MS degrees in Ceramic Engineering from the University of Illinois, where he has served on the Dean’s Board of Visitors of the College of Engineering.
He has mentored hundreds of companies, was a board member of private companies & not-for-profit organizations plus 6 universities. He currently serves as an advisor to several start-up companies. Bill has written an e-book, the Definitive Guide to Raising Money from Angels, & many articles on angel investing. He has been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, INC Magazine, Business Week, New York Times etc.
